We are thrilled to welcome Erik Hoff, a Mexican-American abstract expressionist painter based in Woodstock, IL to The Umbrella. His work is bold, textured, and expressive- each painting created on salvaged materials, giving new life to forgotten surfaces. Every brushstroke carries emotion, movement, and depth making each piece truly a one-of-a-kind.
Daily Digs
Daily Digs, husband and wife dream team duo, Dave and Emily Royek, from Milwaukee, WI are always digging for clothing and records from the 1950s to 1990s.
"We grew up in the Department Store Era and that has a significant influence on our aesthetic. We appreciate the quality and variety of apparel that institutions like Boston Store, JCPenney, Sears, and K-Mart provided back then. We're eclectic and we like to provide pieces that we wore, or our family would have worn from those decades. And, we lived it, so our knowledge is first hand."
Hija de Nada
Hija de Nada (Spanish for Daughter of Nothing) is a tongue-in-cheek play on a Spanish language insult. It is a name that captures Kari's rebellious tendencies, humble roots, and sense of humor. It represents both who she is and the spirit of her work.
Who is Hija de Nada?
The incredible woman behind Hija de Nada is Kari Alvarado Hoff. Her background is in oil painting and literature, however life and career decisions ultimately led her to work in the apparel industry. In 2017, after deciding she wanted to step away from mainstream apparel production, she left my position in design development for a hands-on exploration into alternative production methods. it was then, when she was fortunate to meet, study and collaborate with people who helped to shape the way she would approach her future work.
Prior to 2017, Kari's art practice and work in apparel had been kept separate. Through Hija de Nada (est. 2019) a space was created where this was no longer necessary. Using classic methods of construction, natural fibers, and a one-at-a-time approach, she began to make headwear, clothing and accessories from the perspective of an artist.

You can find Kareena working freelance in costumes for film & tv and you can also shop her fabulous curated collection that she acquired from a couple women that she knows. They sold her their vintage collection that they had been piecing together since the 1980s! All in all it was about 1500 pieces of clothing that Kareena now curates for The Umbrella, as well as Festive Collective, also in Chicago, IL.
